Local church awards college scholarships

Scholarship recipients will attend Westfield State, Cornell University, among other schools

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – St. John’s Congregation Church in Springfield awarded scholarships to high school and college graduates during its Sunday morning service.

This was educational milestone achievement Sunday at St John’s, helping deserving students about to enter college and those going on to get postgraduate degrees. St. John’s pastor, Dr. Calvin McFadden told 22News, this is in keeping with one of the cornerstones of his church.

McFadden said, “St. John’s has a wonderful history of inspiring folks here to have access to a proper education, and we believe in celebrating persons who’ve achieved and we believe this is just a wonderful opportunity to say we’re proud of you and we’re expecting good things from you.”

Scholarship recipient Caitlyn Kirby told 22News, “I am really excited, I went through a lot with my college journey. Just to know I have the support back home, it’s just a blessing in itself.”

Those honored Sunday are going on to or continuing their education at schools including Westfield State University and Cornell University.
