Flag Day observance held in Westfield

American flags of all sizes were unfurled in downtown Westfield

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Flag Day observance in Westfield on Sunday shared by many.

It’s been six years since State Senator Don Humason of Westfield started celebrating Flag Day in the park between the two great river bridges. If you didn’t bring your own flag, Humason had a flag to wave on this special day.

“We just invited people to come down to the park with your flag stand and and wave it as people go by, nothing more than that, It’s low tech, It’s a lot of fun. We bring out groups like scouts, veteran’s people from the community, actually people here from different areas and of course the people driving by,” said Humason.

And so for three hours Sunday afternoon, American flags of all sizes were unfurled in downtown Westfield. We’ll never know how many drivers honked their horns in approval of Humason’s patriotic gesture, but as the hours passed the crowd in the park grew larger as western Massachusetts observed Flag Day.
