The kids had collected more than 1,300 pounds of canned goods

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 5th graders at Springfield’s White Street Elementary School enjoyed the benefits of caring for others Friday.

The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts treated the students to a Forest park Picnic. The kids had collected more than 1,300 pounds of canned goods for the Food Bank, that will be distributed to local food pantries.

Students like Nico Alves enjoyed the rewards as well the opportunity to be of service. Alves said, “I feel pleased, I know I’m helping someone even though I don’t know them. I know I’m helping them.”

Emaley Mellum said, “I asked my family if they could take me to the store and buy cans that I could bring to school.”

The White Street School 5th graders had donated more canned groceries to the Food Bank than any other Springfield elementary school.
