Is anyone to blame for I-91, MGM delays?

The work likely won't get done until 2018

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News first told you on Tuesday how MGM may push back its opening to wait until the I-91 elevated highway construction is complete.

You could point fingers at MGM or MassDOT, but the reality is this is a complex and expensive highway project that the state wants to get right.

Early estimates had the more than $200 million I-91 construction project being done sometime in 2017. It hasn’t even started yet.

The project includes work on the I-91 ramps and East and West Columbus Avenue. MassDOT accepted its contractor’s bid a few months later than expected. We now know that the work likely won’t get done until 2018.

Tim Brennan of the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission said, “The state, to its credit, wants to make sure public dollars, lots of public dollars, are spent wisely. So with that, we also had contractors on the other side of the table saying ‘this is a complicated project, give us some more time’.”

We expect to see the actual construction started this summer, and finished likely between February and July of 2018. MGM willl talk about their construction schedule with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission at the end of June.
