Pope Francis High School location narrowed to two sites

Pope Francis High School will be in Springfield or Chicopee

CHICOPEE, Mass (WWLP) – The Springfield Catholic Diocese has narrowed the location for the new regional Pope Francis High School to two sites.

During a joint meeting of the Diocesan School Board, and school boards representing Cathedral HS, Holyoke Catholic HS and St. Michael’s Academy, it was announced Monday that the two sites under consideration are the former location of Cathedral High School on Surrey Road in Springfield and land owned by St. Stanislaus Basilica Parish Chicopee along Route 33, Memorial Drive.

A final decision on the location is expected within a few weeks.

Cathedral High School was damaged beyond repair in the June 1st, 2011 tornado.

In reaching the final two sites, a number of other locations in Springfield, Chicopee and West Springfield were reviewed and eventually eliminated.

These included land in West Springfield behind the Dominican Nuns Monastery along Brush Hill Road. This location proved to have site challenges in how it was configured along, with limitations from wetlands.
