BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — A Bridgeport man who fatally stabbed the mother of a 9-year-old boy and then tried to kill himself with a drug overdose has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.
The Connecticut Post reports that Alejandro “Macho” Velez was sentenced Friday in Bridgeport Superior Court for the March 2014 killing of 28-year-old Tinese Benson. He previously pleaded guilty to murder
Benson’s mother, Shana Miles, said her family has been waiting for Velez to show some remorse. But Velez didn’t look at the victim’s family at the sentencing and declined to speak.
Police say Velez killed Benson during an argument in his mother’s apartment in Bridgeport, then tried to overdose on prescription drugs. His lawyers said his history of mental illness and drug abuse were factors in the killing.
