HOLYOKE, Mass (WWLP) — Holyoke police received multiple calls for shots fired overnight.
It all started with an argument on Newton Street late Friday night. Holyoke Police Lt. Larry Cournoyer told 22News they received calls for fighting and then shots fired. When police arrived, they searched the area, and arrested a couple of people for disorderly conduct. However, others involved ran, and they weren’t able to find the shooter.
Then, at 3:00 a.m., police received another call for a shooting on the corner of Dwight and Linden Street.
Bill Cronbie, a resident who lives nearby, told 22News he heard multiple shots right up the street. “A guy in gray sweats and a black hoodie was running really fast up the street. There was a lot of screaming and yelling. The kid was lying on the ground then they propped him up against a gray SUV,” he said.
Lt. Cournoyer said two bullets grazed the victim’s back. He was rushed to Baystate Medical Center and he is expected to be ok.
Police were able to make an arrest, and they say it’s the same man who reported getting shot at on Newton Street earlier.
Lt. Counoyer said both the suspect and victim are cooperating with police. He also said this was not a random act of violence, everyone involved in both incidents seemed to know each other.
The shooting is still under investigation, and police said it may be gang related.
In an update on this story, the suspect arrested in Saturday morning’s shooting has been identified as a 17-year old.
