High Pollen Alert this Saturday

How to get some allergy relief

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The spring allergy season is in full bloom. 22News found out if you’re already suffering from allergies, it could get a lot worse this weekend.

It looks like snow in the spring, but it’s not. It’s actually pollen. Not only does it leave a film on your car, it can aggravate your allergies.

“Everyone says ‘Oh this is the worst year ever’ but it actually seems like this year is particularly bad,” said Dr. Ira Helfand with Family Care Medical Center in Springfield. “Allergy sufferers really seem to be suffering this year.”

If you already suffer from allergies it’s about to get a whole lot worse. This Saturday, western Massachusetts is on a high pollen alert. We see increased pollen levels when the wind stirs warm dry air.

Looking at the United States as a whole, western Massachusetts, along with the entire North East really being hit the hardest.

So, if you’re looking from some relief in the morning,  pick an over the counter allergy medicine that’s non-drowsy. If that fails…

“There are inhalable steroids you can use if the over the counter antihistamines don’t work…some people have more trouble with nasal congestion. Some people have more trouble with itchy watery eyes,” Dr. Helfand said.

He continued on to say all allergy medicines with antihistamines are good. So, you can save some money by picking a non-brand name.
