SUV hits boy on bike in Springfield and drove off, driver arrested for OUI heroin

Police found several bags of heroin on the driver

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Police charged a man with operating under the influence of drugs and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident after his SUV hit a boy riding a bicycle in the city’s North End Friday night.

“It’s a hit and run,” Springfield Police Captain Robert Strempek told 22News.

Captain Strempek told 22News the boy’s parents took him to the hospital.  He was conscious, and is expected to be okay.   Captain Strempek was unsure of the boy’s age, but said he could have been 9 years old.

Investigating officers arrested the driver after they stopped his SUV a distance from the accident site.  Police discovered several bags of suspected heroin. The driver was arrested and charged with OUI drugs, heroin; possession of heroin, and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

Captain Strempek said the heroin was a “user’s amount.”

The child was struck on Lowell Street in Springfield at about 5:00 p.m. Friday. The investigation is in its preliminary stages, and police had not yet filed all the appropriate charges against the suspect.
