War memorial service held at Springfield’s Court Square

Wreaths were placed at each of the veterans monuments at Court Square Park

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield honored its war dead Friday with a solemn service at Court Square. Wreaths were placed at each of the veterans’ monuments at Court Square Park.

War veterans came to honor comrades who would never rejoin their loved ones.

Gulf War veteran George Merrill of Springfield spoke candidly about what he considered the sparse turnout for this remembrance of fallen soldiers.

Merrill said, “There’s a lot of people who never served in the military. They don’t understand, while they do barbecues, and drink their beer, and don’t come to these events, what they don’t realize is that their freedom and everything they take for granted came at a bloody price.”

From Friday through Memorial Day Monday, many Western Massachusetts communities will pause to honor their wartime loved ones.
