WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Westfield police detectives are looking for the public’s help to find a missing roadside memorial paying tribute to a veteran who died in a motorcycle accident.

The memorial, located along Southampton Road (Route 10) near the Southampton town line, includes a cross, a peace sign, an American Flag, and flags of the U.S. Air Force and American Legion Riders.

Westfield Police Capt. Michael McCabe told 22News that the memorial, which was reported missing last weekend, was dedicated to Edward Nied of Southampton. Nied died in November 2013 when his motorcycle collided with a bear. He had served in the military during the Vietnam War.

McCabe said that the memorial was located on land owned by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Nied’s family members contacted MassDOT about the missing memorial, but they were told that the department did not take it down.

The family wants the items returned, and police are encouraging anyone who knows where they may be to call the Westfield police department at (413) 562-5411.
