Memorial Day weekend traffic outlook

Construction projects won't be worked on this weekend

LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP)–Your bags may be packed and you may be ready for your long holiday weekend, but you need to also be ready for a high level of traffic this Memorial Day weekend.

AAA Pioneer Valley is anticipating roughly 33 million drivers will be out on the roads nationwide this holiday weekend. That is five percent more than last Memorial Day weekend.

The good news for drivers is that you will be paying the lowest price for gas than what drivers paid in the last five years.

The other good news is that drivers you shouldn’t be facing any construction delays. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation told 22News that other than emergency repairs, all construction work along major state roadways will stop for the weekend starting Friday at noon. It won’t resume until the start of the next business week on Tuesday.

MassDOT also said that the heaviest volume of traffic is expected between 1 P.M. and 7 P.M. both Friday and Monday, so the earlier in the day you can start your trip the better.
