Lane closures caused delays on Sumner Ave.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Ongoing construction work on Sumner Avenue in Springfield caused heavy delays during the morning commute Friday.

Westbound traffic was down to a single lane in two places: at Allen Street and Sumner Avenue, and at White Street and Sumner Avenue.

Allen and Sumner has been the site of a major road construction project for almost a year now, as the entire intersection is being reconfigured. White and Sumner was recently milled, and will be re-paved.

Janice Ross of Springfield expressed frustration at the ongoing work.

“Whose going to pay for my car? I was thinknig I have to dodge the manholes and that sort of thing. The city’s got to do something about it especially for the taxpayers who are paying. City’s got to do something,” Ross said.

The Sumner/White lane closure ended during the morning, but the Sumner/Allen closure continued into the afternoon, causing delays around lunchtime. Springfield DPW Director Chris Cignoli told 22News that they are working intensely to get the project finished by July.

Cignoli estimates that more than 20,000 cars move through that intersection every day
