SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Yolimar Torres became the first Hispanic woman to become a member of the Springfield Fire Department.

As one of 13 new firefighters receiving their badges and equipment Friday, Yolimar Torres joined her father and brother as Springfield firefighters. She’s currently Springfield’s only woman firefighter

Torres told 22News, “Since very young I wanted to do something different. I didn’t want to be like the rest of the girls.”

Of the 13 new firefighters, six are either Hispanic or African-American. Fifty percent of Springfield firefighters are minorities.
