NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – We could all use a little more time in our day, and on June 30, we will get it. An extra second will be added to the clock the last day of next month.
The second is being added to bring the Earth’s rotation and atomic clock back into alignment.
While it doesn’t sound like much, many Internet companies are dreading the day. Computers not equipped to handle the change may be affected, and websites may crash.
Tony Russell-Smith of YES Computers in Northampton told 22News why in the technology world, one little second is a big deal.
“Encryption relies on time being synchronized between all the devices. Like all the encrypted and secure credit card transactions. Things online, as well as important utilities. They all rely on the clocks being synchronized in order to get the right encryption values,” Russell-Smith said.
Despite the change, this is not the first time this has happened. In fact, a second has been added to the clock 25 times since 1972.
