Drivers bracing for Memorial Day traffic

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – If you’re packing up to head out for the long Memorial Day weekend, don’t forget the games or an audio book. AAA is predicting more traffic than any holiday in the past 10 years! The Department of Transportation says it’ll be the worst between 1 and 7PM Thursday, Friday, and Monday.

MassDOT will shut down all construction projects on major roads Friday at noon until Tuesday morning. But drivers told 22News just because there aren’t crews there, doesn’t necessarily make for a smooth ride.

Michael Heiden of Springfield said, “I work for the fire department and we’re constantly going out on the highway for that kind of stuff. Bottlenecks. Doesn’t matter if the workers are there or not, slows it down.”

Viewers told 22News on Facebook they’re bracing for congestion on Interstates 91 and 95, along with route 5. On the Pike, expect it to be slow by exit 9 for the I-94 interchange, and exit 11A, south to the Cape and north to New Hampshire and Maine. The start of busy, summer construction season only makes Memorial Day weekend matters worse.

David Lewis, Sr. of Springfield said, “Because of the narrowness of it, it slows them down anyway. The cement things in the road and the guard rails. It slows people down. I know they try to do Things at night which helps. But the day traffic during the holiday is pretty bad.”
