CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Every year, the City of Chicopee issues the Charles H. Tracy Award to honor a city veteran who hasn’t only served his or her country, but has also served the local community. Veterans and city leaders gathered on Center Street in downtown Chicopee Thursday morning, where Delfo Barabani, Jr. was named this year’s award recipient.
Barabani has served as president of the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America, and has also been active in the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He has been particularly active in programs benefiting young people, and has served as an advisor to the Chicopee Memorial Day Parade Committee, among other activities.
The award is named after Sergeant Charles H. Tracy, a longtime Chicopee resident who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service in the Civil War. He risked his own life to carry a wounded officer to safety during the 1864 Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.
