Obama in Connecticut for graduation speech, fundraiser

Will speak to graduates at Coast Guard Academy in New London, then attend Democratic fundraiser in Stamford

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — President Barack Obama plans is spending much of his day in Connecticut

The president delivered the commencement address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London at 11 a.m.

Following the ceremony, he is headed to Stamford to attend a private fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee.

The Hearst Media Group is reporting that guests are paying up to $33,000 to attend the event at the North Stamford home of businessman Michael Whittingham and have a private audience with the president.

President Obama had not been to Connecticut since last November, when he made a campaign stop in Bridgeport on behalf of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

Malloy also plans to attend the Coast Guard commencement, but the governor’s office says a scheduling conflict will keep him from the fundraiser.
