Massive house fire in Agawam; Springfield St. reopened

The fire started just before 10:00pm Tuesday night.

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – A section of Springfield Street has reopened in Agawam after firefighters worked to bring a house fire at a vacant two-story home under control Tuesday night.

The fire started just before 10:00 Tuesday night at 387 Springfield Street.

The fire burned for more than an hour, mostly on the top floor. A 22News crew at the fire noticed a tar-like smell in the air, and smoke pouring out into the street.

One witness described watching the house engulfed in flames, “I looked up an saw that there was smoke everywhere. It started to get heavier. Then we heard the fire trucks blaring their hones and the whole house just went up in flames.”

Sgt. Grasso of the Agawam Police Department told 22News that Springfield Street was closed from Harding Street to Rowley Street. It has since reopened.

There is no word yet on what caused that fire.
