NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember those who died while serving in the armed forces, but it’s also a time for veterans to watch out for people trying to take advantage of them.

The Better Business Bureau is urging people to be aware of schemes directed at service members and charitable donors.
Memorial Day is a solemn federal holiday, and is taken very seriously by the VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System. They’ll be honoring veterans all weekend long.

Amy Gaskill from VA Central Western Mass. Healthcare System said, “Veterans have sacrificed a lot to protect the freedoms of our country and we’ve lost some very good veterans in those fights, so honoring them and remembering them is very sacred.”

On Saturday morning there will be an Armed Forces Appreciation Day for families at Look Park from 9:30 to 5. They will provide accurate information about benefits for veterans.

The VA will hold a chapel service on Monday.
