Federal Government trying to reverse honey bee decline

Bees are crucial to pollinating many crops across the country.

GREENFIELD Mass. (WWLP) – The Federal Government is trying reverse the declining honeybee population in the United States.

They plan on doing that by making more federal land “bee friendly,” spending more money on research and possibly using less pesticide.

Scientists believe the reason we’re seeing a decline in the honeybee population in the first place is because of diseases, pesticides and a lack of nutrition. One Greenfield resident who grew up on a farm in Greece said bees were important back then, and they’re important now.

Demosthenis Leristis told 22News, “Without bees we wouldn’t have any fruit, any vegetables and other flowers because they need pollen which the bees go from one tree to another or from vegetable to vegetable and that’s how we get our produce and our fruit.

According to the White House, bees provide more than $15 billion dollars in value to the U.S. economy.
