Pancake breakfast draws hundreds to downtown Springfield

This was the 25th year the Spirit of Springfield has held the event

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It takes 3,450-lbs of flour, 600-lbs of eggs, 350-lbs of butter, and 450-gallons of water sizzling on a hot grill. The finished product? Thousands of pancakes whipped up and served right in the middle of downtown Springfield.

The World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast attracted hundreds of people to the city of Springfield Saturday morning. The annual tradition has put Springfield on the map since 1986, drawing large crowds that stretch from one end of Main Street, all the way to the other.

Springfield resident, Shakita Bradford, said she brings her two little ones to the breakfast every single year. “I would say their favorite part is the guy who walks around with the stuffed animals in his cart, they love that, and the face painting. We come every year, they love it, and so I love it. If they enjoy themselves, I enjoy myself,” she said.

For many of the families, the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast is about much more than stacks of pancakes, it’s about spending time with neighbors, friends, and members of the community.

James Collins of South Hadley told 22News for him, it’s a way to reunite with old friends and celebrate the city of Springfield. “Folks are coming down and getting together, people are here pretty much having a good time, it’s a good thing,” he said.

Russell resident, Derrick Dirker, volunteers at the breakfast every year. He told 22News it’s a feel-good event, and he enjoys every minute of it. “It’s good to get the community out here and enjoy pancakes together, and just have a good time. I enjoy doing it, for the families,” he said.

This was the 25th year the Spirit of Springfield has held the event, which also served as a 379th birthday celebration for the city of Springfield.
