SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Organizers of the Great New England Air Show are asking those attending the event have patience to plan a lot of extra time for added traffic getting to the show.

Organizers for the air show say that from the time drivers get off the Massachusetts Turnpike to Westover Air Reserve Base, it could take as long as an hour, but with several world renowned air demonstration teams performing, the event is expected to be well worth the wait.

Several other events also going on the weekend of May 16th and 17th are expected to further delay traffic.

The World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast in downtown Springfield runs Saturday starting from 8:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., but set up for the even begins Friday at 10:00 A.M. Main Street from State to Bridge Streets will be closed from Friday at 10:00 A.M. through Saturday at 3:00 P.M. By early Friday morning, plastic bags were already covering the parking meters on Main Street, and “No Parking” signs were put up.

Also on Saturday at the Mass Mutual Center, Elms College will be holding its commencement at 10:00 A.M. which is right outside where the Pancake Breakfast will be taking place. Later in the day, Westfield State University will hold its graduation ceremony at 4:00 p.m. at the Mass Mutual Center. On Sunday, Springfield College will have its graduation at 9:30 A.M. at the Mass Mutual Center, and then, American International College at 3:00 P.M.

All of the commencement ceremonies are expected to add to traffic backups in and around Springfield’s downtown area.
