Investigators push to find boy 30 years later

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) — A boy who went missing in 1982 has been gone for 30 years, but he hasn’t been forgotten. The push to find him is heating up again.

Niagara County Sheriff’s Deputies, with the help of FBI in Buffalo are again pushing for answers to find a person who would look totally different, and potentially not even remember the event which caused him to go missing.

Police there say they can’t say they’re certain Russel Mort is still alive, but they’re exhausting old and new theories on how he disappeared. On Wednesday, rescue divers searched the Niagara River to flesh out the theory that he may have jumped into part of it near the Lynch Trailer Park where he lived.

With the help of their FBI partners, police released an image of what Mort looked like when he went missing on May 5 of 1982 side-by-side with an age-progressed image.

Now police are asking anybody who lived in the trailer park at that time to come forward with any information, even if it isn’t related to Mort going missing. They say the slightest lead could prove helpful.

“We’re looking for everybody that lived in, went through, visited somebody who lived in the Lynch trailer park in the 1980-1981-1982 time period,” FBI Special Agent in Charge Brian Boetig said. “They don’t have to have known Russel Mort, they just need to known something about that trailer park.  If they have old photographs, we’d like to get those.”

Over the 30 years Mort has been missing, police have found leads, at one point even locating a person who they said thought he may have been Mort — a DNA test dismissed that possibility.

Anybody with information is asked to call police at (716) 438-3393.
