Climbers trigger avalanche in Alaska

(KPVI) Two Idaho men say they are lucky to be alive tonight after triggering an avalanche on an Alaska mountain Monday evening.

27-year old Saxon Spillman of Pocatello and 24-year old Michael Wachs of Idaho Falls were not caught in the avalanche Monday on Mount Dickey in Denali National Park and Preserve.

Spillman and Wachs were climbing the mountain when they triggered the avalanche. They tried to find a safe exit route but were trapped on the mountain.

Wachs says he and Spillman checked avalanche conditions and did all the necessary pre-planning before climbing the mountain, but in the end it was luck that saved their lives.

“I shouldn’t be here today,” said Wachs. “I really shouldn’t.”
