(NBC News) A recent survey that found more than a third of American adults have never checked their credit score has financial advisers and analysts baffled.
“To say that you’ve never checked your credit report is kind of crazy,” says Bankrate.com‘s Jeanine Skowronski, “especially when you consider all the data breaches we’ve had.”
Skowronski says seniors and millennials are the ones most likely to never look, even though everyone is entitled to one free report a year from each of the three credit bureaus.
“Really just go through line by line and review for accuracy,” Skowronski advises. “If something looks amiss, they’ll be instructions in the credit report somewhere where you can contact the bureau and dispute the information and go from there.”
Store a hard copy of the report in a secure location in your house or in password protected area of your computer.
