LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – An alert citizen just over the state line in Connecticut helped lead police to the discovery of an 11 year-old boy from Longmeadow who had been missing for hours Monday.
Longmeadow police Capt. John Stankiewicz told 22News that the boy, whose name is Martin, was found at around 3:00 P.M. inside the Enfield Square Mall. He is now being reunited with his parents, and police are interviewing him to determine exactly what happened.
Stankiewicz told 22News that after hearing about the missing boy in the local media, someone who was visiting the mall observed Martin’s bicycle, helmet, and backpack at a bike rack outside the mall.
Stankiewicz said that Martin was last seen leaving his Maple Road home at around 8:15 while on his way to the Wolf Swamp School. Officers were notified at around 10:15 after he failed to show up at school.
Our 22News crew in Longmeadow could see police searching in the area of Greenwood Park, along Maple Road, early Monday afternoon. Massachusetts State Police and a police dog from Springfield were called in to assist Longmeadow police in their search.
Police had given out a description of Martin, as well as that of his bicycle, helmet, and the backpack to 22News and other local media outlets.
