(CNN) – We’ve all heard the saying, “don’t go grocery shopping while you’re hungry,” but there’s a better piece of advice:
Keeping a shopping list may help you lose weight.
Making a grocery list may seem like a mundane task but it could help you lose weight.
Diet and exercise are essential to slimming down, but something as simple as a grocery list could help jump start your weight loss journey.
According to a new study in the journal of nutrition education and behavior, those who made a shopping list before going to the store had a healthier weight than those who didn’t.
Researchers found they weighed an average of five-pounds less than those who shopped without a list.
According to the research, those who regularly made grocery lists also bought healthier food.
Researchers interviewed more than 1300 residents in a pair of low-income Pittsburgh neighborhoods.
Nearly 80 percent of the people interviewed were overweight or obese.
The researchers caution these results might not apply to higher income families.
Here’s why planning is important; a third of American adults are obese, and in low-income areas, there are typically fewer options for healthy food. And when healthier foods are available, they’re often more expensive than processed foods.
