GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) –¬†With the weather getting nicer and people anxious to ride their bikes, it’s going to get a lot easier for bicycle-riders to get around Greenfield.

Starting this week, designated bike lanes are open on Federal Street, running from Silver Street to Maple Street.
This comes as good news to people who like to commute by bike. “I feel really excited for Greenfield to get bike lanes, as someone who really likes to ride my bike, especially on a street like federal street,” said Casey Milkey of Northfield.

Many cyclists told 22News they ride bikes because of the health benefits. In fact, one Greenfield resident told 22News she hasn’t ridden a bike in years, but she plans on getting back into it. “Got a bike and I’m going to be riding with my grandchild and riding around town, hopefully ridding to work,” said Lisa McGuinness of Greenfield.

This is also Bike Week in the Pioneer Valley, marked by several free events through out Hampden, Hamsphire and Franklin Counties, including one at Bicycle World for those who work up an appetite riding to work. “We have particularly done one for a number of years called free lunch which is for anybody who rides their bike to work, on Friday they show up from 12 to two and we feed them,” said Chris Ethier from Bicycle World in Greenfield.

Bike Week is also meant to encourage people to bike their way to work, school or other short commutes.
