(CNN) – This Mother’s Day will be twice as special for one Rockford family. A young woman and her mom got pregnant at the same time. Their babies were born just a couple weeks apart back in march.
“It was something that we never thought we’d share together” Maritza Zuniga said.
Last summer was full of big announcements and surprises for 19-year-old Maritza Zuniga and her mom 37-year-old Marisela Martinez. The first, Marisela finding out she was having a baby. Little did anyone know; just weeks later Maritza would share the same news.
Maritza Zuniga said, “We went over with my husband to eat, we were going to tell them that day it’s just…We were so nervous. I’m like ‘Oh my God this is going to be weird! How am I going to tell my mom when she’s pregnant too?'”
They were anxious at first, but also excited as the mother-daughter duo started a journey they never expected to take together. During both pregnancies, there were ups and downs along the way.
Maritza Zuniga said, “She would get something before me and I’d learn from that. Or she’d get a symptom and I’d know that it was coming or how to deal with it.”
Finally the big days arrived. Marisela’s baby boy, Mateo, was born first. Just 16 days later, Maritza’s son Issak came into the world.
Marisela Martinez said, “We’re always thinking in the future that they’re always going to be together– they’re going to be best buddies.” Marisela already sees that her daughter is a great parent. She loves him so much. It’s only one word– love.”
Maritza says that’s because she’s watched and learned from the best. And in the adventure that lies ahead, she says it’s comforting to know her mom will be there to guide her.
Maritza Zuniga said, “I just want to say thank you to my mom for being my mom and teaching me. She’s a really strong woman and I want to follow in her footsteps. I know everyone says their mom is the best mother– mine is the best, too.”
