SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Mother’s Day has been celebrated as an official U.S. holiday since 1914 and flowers have always been a popular gift.
However, at Sixteen Acres Garden Center in Springfield, it wasn’t just the act of giving them to Mom: It was all about picking them out and planting them together at home. It’s a tradition these moms look forward to each year.
Owner Steve Bordenuk told 22News this is one of the busiest days of the season for them. It wasn’t just families bonding over flowers. “There’s a lot of last minute guys coming in. Roses are real popular too because they’re easy to take care of,” Bordenuk told 22News.
The most popular flowers for mom were the hanging plants, but other popular items were vegetables like kale and tomatoes.
Some moms, like Liz Tousignant, got a gift card to the garden center for Mother’s Day, so she could buy exactly what she wanted with her daughters.
“We’re going to plant our flowers in the front yard and maybe we’re going to get some vegetables here so we can plant them in the backyard,” her daughter Courtney told 22News.
Planting was just one part of the day spent with mom. “Grandma came over and we had breakfast with her so we’re going to buy her some flowers too,” said Jacob St. Germain. And, after gardening, Brianna Conant of Springfield said, “We’re going to have dinner with our grandparents and family.”
For some, Mother’s Day is all about making memories together, but for others, it’s remembering those times spent with Mom so long ago.
