SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – On Saturday night, the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity of Springfield awarded a 25-hundred dollar scholarship to a high school senior.
It was part of the 7th annual Senator Edward W. Brooke III Oratorical Scholarship competition. 8 men gave speeches about a message they would give 50 years from now to the present-day Springfield community.
22News spoke with the winner about the message he would share. “Education is tied to economic initiative. You can’t have one without the other. To do well in education is to do well economically. It’s a direct link,” said Owen Tynes
Owen told 22News parents need to make sure they elect public officials that support the youth. He said he chose to write his speech on education and economics after a conversation with his dad about what the biggest civil rights issue is.
