Roof fire at the old Chicopee High School

The former High School is in the process of being renovated

CHICOPEE, Mass (WWLP) — There was a roof fire during renovations Saturday morning at the former Chicopee High School on Front Street.

Old Chicopee Fire 1Acting Deputy Chief, Captain Patrick Helpin is in charge of the firefighting operation. Workers renovating the High School are said to have first noticed smoke coming from the roof. The fire was extinguished quickly.

The sun may be to blame. Chicopee Fire Captain Patrick Helpin told 22News the sun may have created reflective heat from the thermal pane windows and ignited some combustible material on the roof of the old Chicopee High School.

The former High School is in the process of being renovated to become a middle school scheduled to open in the fall.
