RALEIGH,  N.C. (AP) — Jurors will resume deliberations next week in a lawsuit filed by a Raleigh police officer who says he suffered third-degree burns after a cup of Starbucks coffee spilled in his lap three years ago.

WRAL-TV in Raleigh reports jury members told the judge Friday they were deadlocked at 11-to-1. The judge said he would declare a mistrial if jurors couldn’t reach a unanimous decision.

Matthew Kohr says the lid popped off his coffee, which was free to officers in uniform. The cup collapsed in his lap. He says the incident caused severe stress, triggering his Crohn’s disease and leading to surgery to remove part of his intestine.
Kohr is suing Starbucks for between $50,000 and $750,000.

An attorney for Starbucks argued that Kohr was negligent and said his pre-existing condition caused his problems.
