Gov. Baker asks feds to extend disaster aid declaration

Approximately 250 cities and towns are eligible for assistance

BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Charlie Baker is appealing a decision by the federal government to limit disaster aid to the state to a 48-hour period during the first of a string of snowstorms that pummeled the state.

Baker initially asked federal officials to declare the entire 28-day period a disaster.

Baker on Thursday limited his appeal to the first blizzard in late January, asking that the disaster declaration for snow removal costs be extended from 48 to 72 hours.

Baker said the extension will help state agencies, municipalities and nonprofits.

The disaster declaration, issued in April, allowed eligible entities to seek 75 percent reimbursement of snow removal costs. Baker said that initial disaster aid declaration could bring between $80 million and $90 million.

Approximately 250 cities and towns are eligible for assistance.
