LUDLOW, Mass (WWLP) — Three teenagers were taken to the hospital after their car caught fire following a single car crash in Ludlow Friday night.
The accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on West. Ave., near Lilian St. in Ludlow. Ludlow Police Sgt. Daniel Valadas told 22News the driver of the car was allegedly speeding when his car rolled over, crashed into a utility pole, then caught on fire. People nearby who witnessed the accident told police he was driving on the wrong side of the road at the time of the crash.
Sgt. Valadas said there was one 17 year-old and two 16 year-olds in the car. The 17 year-old driver is still considered a “junior operator.” According to Massachusetts law, it’s illegal for junior operators to drive with minors in the car, unless a 21 year-old is also present.
Officers also found and confiscated $30 dollars worth of marijuana in the car. No word as to whether the teens were under the influence of marijuana at the time or whether it contributed to the crash.
The car accident is still under investigation by police, but Sgt. Valadas said the driver of the car could face charges for speeding, and driving with minors.
All three teenagers were taken to Baystate Medical Center by ambulance, and are expected to be ok.
