(KGW) A $7 million restoration project will begin in the summer of 2017 to save Sturgeon Lake on Oregon’s Sauvie Island.
The lake takes up nearly a quarter of the island and provides critical habitat to millions of migratory birds every year.
It also provides a safe resting place juvenile salmon heading back out to the ocean.
The problem is, the lake is slowly disappearing. It’s simply not getting enough water.
Sand, debris and garbage are cutting off the channel that connects the Columbia River to the lake.
