National Guard takes on Avian flu

(KARE) The National Guard deployed 15 trucks and 30 soldiers to Kandiyohi County Monday, which has been ground zero for Minnesota’s avian flu outbreak.

It’s an unusual deployment for the National Guard which usually responds to flood areas or wildfires.

“It just seemed strange. The bird flu outbreak. I didn’t think the National Guard would be activated,” said Staff Sergeant Alyssa Graham. “But once we learned our mission yesterday it makes more sense now.”

Each truck can carry 2,000 gallons of water which will be used in the euthanasia process at infected farms. The foam used to kill large amounts of turkeys requires more water than many farms are equipped to provide.
