CHICOPEE, Mass. (Mass Appeal) – Everyone does it at least occasionally. We put something off and say we’ll just do it a little later. So why do we procrastinate? Clinical Psychologist Dr. Elaine Ducharme shared tips on overcoming procrastination!
How to Overcome Procrastination
1. Think about the task as something you want to do…not should do or must do or someone is making you do it….Ask why would I choose to do this
2.Visualize the benefit…how will you feel when it is done
3. Start with something small task organize one drawer….one shelf
4. Break the task down into manageable piece…generally think of allowing 15 minutes to work on it
5. Be accountable…tell someone you are going to do it…have a buddy
Most of the time…after 15 minutes you will have completed the task or can stop knowing you fulfilled your own commitment…or you may discover increased motivation to continue to do a bit more
Is procrastination a learned behavior or are some people just born that way?
Most of the time it is a learned behavior…some people really perfect it…the only negative consequences are to themselves…increased anxiety
The more you practice breaking through your own psychological resistance the easier it gets. Like exercising any muscle. The more you do it the better you get at it. And then you will have more time for fun stuff!
