Gary Rome one step closer to opening dealership in Holyoke

Planning Board recommends a zone change for Whiting Farms Road property

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – New information on a vacant piece of property on Whiting Farms Road in Holyoke. The city’s planning board has unanimously recommended a zone change that would allow Gary Rome to build a car dealership on the site.

Rome has been looking to expand his Hyundai dealership, and build on the vacant Whiting Farms Road property in Holyoke. Holyoke Gas & Electric owns the site, and agreed to sell it to Rome for more than $2 million.

Tuesday, the Holyoke Planning Board recommended a zone change for the property, to Business Highway. This recommendation get’s passed on to the ordinance committee, and then to the city council who will make a vote. So, this is not a done deal yet for Gary Rome, although it is a big step for him in the right direction.

Rome estimates he’d invest about $10 million into an eco-friendly dealership, and in the past, told 22News he is willing to work with residents who live in the Whiting Farms Road area, who have been pushing for the planning board to deny the zone change request.

Rome pledged the creation of his new dealership would create 50 full-time and 25 part-time jobs. 22News will continue to follow this story and bring you the ordinance committees recommendation as soon as it’s made.
