Amtrak train hits car on tracks in Rhode Island, 1 killed

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — Police say a driver has been killed when a car drove onto railroad tracks and was struck by an Amtrak passenger train in Rhode Island.

South Kingstown police say the accident happened just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday near Waites Corner Road in the village of West Kingston. Police say only one person was in the car.

Amtrak says no one was injured on the southbound train traveling from Boston to Washington, D.C., with 207 passengers and crew.

The accident is being investigated by South Kingstown police, Rhode Island state police and Amtrak police.
