Sinkhole opens up in downtown Springfield

Water and Sewer Commission will investigate Monday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A sinkhole formed on Main Street in Springfield Saturday, snarling traffic until it could be repaired.

It’s not a permanent fix, but the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission put metal plates over the hole in the pavement, which was about the size of a car.

The hole formed on Main Street, right in front of the Red Rose Pizzeria.

Springfield Water and Sewer spokesperson Joyce Mulvaney told 22News they plan on putting a camera into the pipe under the road on Monday to see what caused the hole.

Red Rose told 22News they did not have to close.

As a temporary fix, metal plates were placed over the hole.
