Joshua Devine disappeared last weekend during a diving trip to swim with whale sharks in the Andaman Sea. 22News spoke with Devine’s mother, Marie Major, who said that marine police had stopped their search for her son. Embassies and Thai Government offices had been shut down during the early part of the week, due to the Thai New Year’s holiday.

Major said that the trip continued on without her son, and people who were on the boat posted pictures on social media of the fun they were having.

Major told 22News reporter Kait Walsh that she is hopeful Joshua is still alive, as he was highly skilled and well surpassed the standard tests for Army training.

Family spokesperson Alison Podworski notified 22News that Devine’s mother and sister will be arriving in Thailand on Saturday, where they will be going to the U.S. Embassy, and will try to get in touch with the FBI. They will also work with a private investigator and an attorney in Thailand.
