Marijuana legalization draft submitted for 2016 ballot question

Submitting the question for initial review is just the first step towards getting it on the 2016 ballot

CHICOPEE Mass. (WWLP) – A group hoping to legalize the recreational use of marijuana in Massachusetts has submitted an initial draft of a proposed ballot question to the state attorney general’s office.

Bay State Repeal said the question would allow adults 21 or older to purchase the drug from licensed sellers while also taking steps to ban sales to minors.

One local resident told 22news he would still be conflicted on a ballot question, even with strict regulations in place. Marc St. Onge of Russell said, “People are going to enjoy it no matter what and why should they be criminalized…But on the other hand, I have the feeling of why do we need another substance like alcohol.”

Submitting the question for initial review is just the first step towards getting it on the 2016 ballot. Attorney General Maura Healey said her office will give the question a preliminary review.
