SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – New numbers are out for the job market after students graduate with a bachelor’s degree, and the news is not good.
The Labor Department says job prospects for recent college graduates deteriorated slightly last year despite an improvement in the overall job market.
For graduates with bachelor’s degrees, unemployment climbed to 14.9 percent last year, from 11.5 percent in 2013. But for those with advanced degrees, unemployment improved to 5.4 percent, from 9.3 percent.
Western New England University senior Marcus Biggins told 22News his approach for getting a job after graduation.
“I’ve applied to a bunch of police departments across the nation, not so much just New England. I’m waiting to hear back to see if I can get into the academy. I think that by limiting where you apply to a smaller area, your chances are slimmer than applying across the country.”
Overall, the economy generated 3.1 million jobs last year, the most since 1999.
