Mass. student charged after gun found in locker

The gun and ammunition were turned over to police

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A 16-year-old high school student who was heard making a threat against a police officer was arrested Friday after a loaded handgun and ammunition were found in a school locker, authorities said.

The locker was searched after a teacher at Burncoat High School overheard a conversation between students about a gun and the boy’s intention to use the weapon to shoot a police officer, according to Worcester police.

“A student who brings a loaded handgun to school and makes threats, is clearly a reality check and a wakeup call for those who oppose enhanced communications links between police and schools,” said Police Chief Gary Gemme in a statement. “Sadly, this incident is a reminder of the threats that the police and school must prepare for.”

The gun and ammunition were turned over to police who were called to the school at around noon Friday.

The teen, whose name was not released because of his age, was charged with possession of a firearm without a license and possession of ammunition without a firearms identification card.

The investigation was active and ongoing, police said.
