Two men shot “drive-by” style on Alden Street in Springfield

A stray bullet hit a gas meter pipe

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Two men were shot in Springfield’s Six Corners neighborhood Monday night.

Sgt. John Delaney told 22News the victims were shot while walking on Alden Street around 6:30 p.m. Monday. One victim, a 23 year old man, was shot in the calf, and a 33 year old man was shot in the foot. Both victims were taken to the E.R., and are expected to be okay.

Police found numerous shell casings on Alden Street. The casings were marked by orange cones placed by police on Alden Street.

During that shooting, a stray bullet hit a gas meter pipe on a nearby house.

“Officer Michael Mitchell of the Mason Square C-3 Police Unit thought quickly and rushed into the home and shut off the gas valve preventing a tragedy and explosion. The Gas Company responded and replaced the damaged pipe,” Sgt. Delaney told 22News.

Delaney said the shots were fired from a passing car in a “drive by” fashion. He went on to say that the victims were not being cooperative. He believes the incident involves rival gangs.

If you have any information about the shooting you’re asked to call the Springfield Police Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355.
