WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – New developments Tuesday night after a statue was stolen from a tombstone at a West Springfield cemetery. 22News spoke with a devastated relative who is searching for answers.
“It’s just hard to believe that someone would steal something like this from the cemetery,” said Edward Adamczyk.
Above is a photo of the statue that sat atop Adamczyk’s family grave marker at St. Thomas Cemetery for nearly 75 years. However, when he visited the grave site Friday, he found the statue had been chiseled from the granite gravestone and stolen.
Adamchek said it was hand carved out of marble in Italy and cost $15,000. He reported it stolen to police but there have been no leads so far. Adamchek told 22News it’s not about the money, but the family memory that was stolen.
“Just to think of what my grandfather went through to be able to afford to send to Italy to have one hand carved, the statue of that size and that delicacy…. it’s just very hard to accept,” he said.
Adamczyk told 22News his grandfather ordered the marble sculpture in 1941 for a child who died at just 11-years-old. He said one way or another, he plans to replace the statue.
