SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Almost 40 years ago, suburban Springfield schools began accepting a limited number of students from Springfield’s low income neighborhoods.

A new report from the state claims the METCO program has been so successful helping inner city students succeed that the METCO program will expand into more western Massachusetts schools.

The report says that by going to suburban schools, students living in Springfield stand a better chance of going to college.

22News has extensively covered METCO success stories. We profiled the success of Jenaquay Smith and Ahtavia Wright of Springfield. They were attending East Longmeadow High School as they prepared to enter college.
