Program encourages people to switch to electric car

The money will go to the state's electric vehicle rebate program

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Governor Charlie Baker is pumping another 2 million dollars into a program that’s meant to encourage you to switch to an electric car.

The money will go to the state’s electric vehicle rebate program. The program offers Massachusetts residents rebates up to 25-hundred dollars if they buy or lease an electric vehicle.

Some say it’s a good use of the state’s money. Jim Mercier of Longmeadow told 22News, “I think long term it’s best for the state and best for the county. It reduces emissions, green house gas, yeah, I mean there’s lots of ways the state could spend the money but I think it’s a great idea.”

So far, the program has given rebates for more than 700 low-emission cars, including battery electric and zero-emission motorcycles.
